During this quarter, we came across many kinds of readings, some that have dealt with capitalist groups making their way into foreign lands, the struggle of maintaining a culture, discrimination and so on. Some examples of these kinds of relations were the readings about the Chinese in Honolulu and Jamaica, Korean people in Japan and Okinawan people. They each went through their own struggle where some were made to abandon what they know and live in an unfamiliar and sometimes unwelcoming environment. They each attempted to maintain the practices of their cultures regardless of the backlash they would get from…

Taking another look into Goffe’s passage, I recalled the stress on the power of soundscapes in terms of communication. This really paved the way for the Chinese and Jamaican people to connect and communicate spiritually through music etc. This is how the Chiney shop became kind of like a safe space that was said to be for “leisure and lyrical music exchange”. Unfortunately, capitalism came in and diminished those communications between the two and causes there to be injustices and stereotypes among the Jamaican people. Sound is very important because it is what brought the Chinese and Jamaican people together…

When one is too used to their surroundings, they begin to fail to see things that would be problematic to someone else’s eyes, that’s why I beleive that Liang Qichao and He Zhen brought about how Chinese politics should be when they were outside China rather than doing everything from the inside. I think it’s important to see things from other perspectives to be able to feel and understand other viewpoints and so on. This is exactly what Liang Qichao and He Zhen did as they explored those different viewpoints when they were outside and distanced from the place they…

  1. If we think about how sound was used in terms of the relationship between the Chinese and the Jamacins, we can find that it is very much linked to the colonialism. This is because when the Chinese made their way into Jamaica, sound was used to blend into the country. It made the intergration between the two go much more smoothly. Between the Chinese shops and Jamaican music they were able to gain prosperity for their race, ultimately gaining control over most reasourses. Even though the Chinese integrating into Jamaica was very new, capitalism makes it so society ignores down…

Week 1 Discussion Questions

  1. Dr. Gilmore described racial capitalism as using the unequal hierarchy that capitalism has to take advantage of particular races and exploiting them of labor. Dr. Gilmore talked described the two as basically coming hand in hand with eachother. Certain races are often neglected and not given what the rest of society is.
  2. Abolitionist geography to places such as the municipality of Amadora which is where Dr. Gilmore mentioned. This was where the people living there conflicted because of not being able to properly maintain their households. This was untimately linked to racism and it was location based which is why it falls under abolitionist geography.
